This years national Black History Month's theme is Celebrating our Sisters / Saluting our Sisters / Matriarchs of Movements #WEMATTER during Black History Month 2023 is a landmark occasion to recognise and applaud the invaluable contributions of black women to British society, inspire future generations, and empower them. Let us honour the achievements of black women, amplify their voices, and challenge the systems that oppress them. (Blackhistorymonth.org, 2023)

As part of the BHM celebrations this year, Barnet's 0-19 Early Help Service are inviting children and young people to participate in several activities that are focusing on celebrating black culture. From African/Caribbean Cooking to Afro-Caribbean Hairdressing, African Caribbean inspired Arts & Crafts, Caribbean Carnival Headdress making and many more - we have so many to choose from.

Fashion Masterclass

In celebration of Black History & Culture month, we are offering a brilliant 3/4-day Fashion Masterclass, following the art & cultural references of the multidimensional African diaspora. We will be diving deep into Black History & culture and its influence on Fashion as we know it.

The African Cultural Association and Barnet Libraries present African Drumming and Dance Workshop

To commemorate Black History Month, The African Cultural Association will showcase live performances featuring traditional African music/drumming and dancing.

Come and join our Street Dnace Sessions as we celebrate Hip-Hop Music turning 50. We will be combining a number of dance styles including hip hop, break dance and commercial just to name a few.

During African Drumming children will come together to learn and have fun around African traditionals, heritage and culture and learn the unique and profound symbolic meaning of these drums and how they represent the soul of the community they're found in countries in Africa.

During Steel Pans Young people will come together to learn and have fun around Carribean traditions, heritage and culture and learn the unique and profound symbolic meaning of these instruments and how they represent the soul of the community they're found in countries in the Carribean.

Flag Design

This Black History Month, come and celebrate black culture and heritage with our flag deisgn workshop. You'll use all the different materials and accessories to recreate the different African and & Caribbean National Flags.

African & Caribbean Cooking Workshop

Join us on this 1 day cooking workshop at Canada Villa Youth Centre. Kinder Kitchen is a local Barnet based enterprise that teaches the basic life skill of cooking and healthy, independent and sustainable living. During this hands-on cookery workshop the aim is to inspire and empower children to be able to prepare and cook healthy dishes from scratch.
