Sailing Stage 1 Course: Learn, Sail, Build Confidence

Ready to take the helm and learn something new on the water? Join Barnet Youth for our Sailing Stage 1 Course, a 2-day beginner programme designed to help you gain confidence and become comfortable sailing.

This 12-hour course is perfect for complete beginners, giving you the time, support and experience needed to develop essential sailing skills in a fun and active environment.

Each day begins with a safety briefing, followed by getting changed into activity wear. You’ll be provided with all the necessary equipment, including buoyancy aids, waterproof jackets and wetsuits if needed. You’ll also take part in a short land-based session where you’ll learn how to set up the equipment and understand the basics before heading onto the water.

Across the two days, you’ll spend around 5 hours on the water each day, building your skills through a mix of structured learning and engaging activities around the reservoir.

Over the course, you’ll:

  • Learn the basics of sailing and how to control the boat
  • Build confidence steering and handling equipment
  • Take part in fun games, challenges and races on the water
  • Practise your skills through guided sailing sessions
  • Develop teamwork and communication

At the end of each day, you’ll return all equipment, get changed and be ready for collection. As you’ll be spending extended time on the water, it’s recommended to bring two spare sets of clothing.

This course includes:

  • A supportive, beginner-friendly learning environment
  • All equipment provided, including safety gear and clothing
  • Guidance from experienced and friendly instructors
  • A structured course to help you develop and progress

It’s a great opportunity to try sailing, learn new skills and build confidence on the water.
